About the Chugach Wilderness Experience Tour:
Eklutna Lake Recreation Area is located 40 minutes from downtown Anchorage and is a phenomenal place to learn kayaking, ride a bike, or explore by independently hiking. Eklutna Lake Recreation Area has 26 miles of well-marked and user-friendly trails where the biking and hiking opportunities are endless! Ekultna Lake, with its turquoise waters and calm winds is the ideal place to experience kayaking in the Alaskan wilderness. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced kayaker, Ekultna Lake offers spectacular views and supreme serenity by kayak. Choose from between the Paddle & Pedal or ATV Adventure Tour.
Depart the downtown Anchorage area and visit Eklutha Village, dating back to 1650’s, this village is the area's oldest continuously inhabited Athabaskan Indian settlement. Russian Orthodox missionaries came here in the early 1800s, and you can still see St. Nicholas Church, the oldest standing building in greater Anchorage. Check out the colorful Spirit Houses build over the graves of the deceased-a custom that came from the melding of the cultures.
Next, we will head to the secluded Eklutna Lake, a great spot to picnic, hike, bike or take an optional ATV tour. The lakeside trail follows the lakeshore for 7-10 miles, then onto glacial gravel bars. You'll get views of steep canyon walls, waterfalls and Eklutna Glacier. Eklutna Lake is surrounded by the Chugach Mountains, home to moose, Dall sheep, and both black and grizzly bear.
We will do a lake side picnic where you will enjoy a deli style lunch. Enjoy your surroundings and free time to explore, hike, walk this beautiful lakeside setting or choose from one of the optional activities listed below.
